I'm pretty in to it. It would be nice if it left a little more to the imagination, but the sweet yet naughty edginess of black lace always appeals to me. Even though it should be too much, the vintage, almost burlesque sexiness makes it work. It's different than anything I've seen lately, while still remaining really current.
I don't know if I'd ever have the cajones to wear it, but my inner skank is giving this two thumbs up.

Damn! Down to the shoes and everything! I honestly want to hand this one to Ciara, as a curvy girl myself I know sometimes all that ruffle and poof just makes you look a bit too "fluffy".
However, Something inside me just won't allow me to let Ciara to get away with this one...even the same shoes? A month and a half later? They're friends, they hang out! She should have damn well known what this would look like!
I'm all for sharing a deal with a friend, but they don't need deals, and this is the red carpet we're talking about. I'm saying, what part of the game is scrap collecting? Pure chickenheadry. The dress isn't even that hot to be digging through your homegirls salvation army bags like that.

This past year I've been really into nail polish colors. They're an easy and inexpensive way to stay on trend, while still being subtle, so you don't end up looking like a fashion victim.

Luckily nail polish colors are released in collections every season, just like clothing, which completely takes the guesswork out of choosing the hottest current shades. By the time I make my way through each seasons collection a new one is coming out right on its heels.

The two collections I always look out for are Essie and Opi, so I was really excited to see that Essie has revealed their Winter collection. The commercial for Beyonce's fragrance has been banned from showing during the daytime in the U.K. because people were complaining that it was too sexually provocative.

I don't think its any worse than a music video, although once or twice I was pretty sure I was about to catch a nip slip. I don't know what type of tape she uses but her girls always almost pop out, yet never do...hmm.

Either way this is definitely a case of all press being good press. Doesn't it just make you want to watch the commercial more now?!

H&M is launching Lanvin for H&M November 20th. Since the collection is in very high demand, we’re expecting a crowd.

What do I do if I arrive before opening hours?

If there is a line, please wait in line, and H&M store staff will inform you on how to shop.

How does the queuing system work?

The first 320 in line will receive one of 16 different colored bracelets, 20 people for each bracelet color; on the bracelet you will be given a specific time for shopping in our designated area. The bracelets are only needed for the women’s collection. Customers buying the men’s collection will not require a bracelet.

When your time slot arrives, you will enter the designated area to shop for 15 minutes. Our goal is to create a better shopping experience for our customers.

If you are not one of the first 320 in line, you will of course have the opportunity to shop from the rest of the collection or within H&M. When the 16 groups have finished their shopping, we will also open up a designated area for all our customers.

To make sure as many customers as possible are able to buy the collection, we have a shopping limit. Every customer can buy from the entire collection, but with a limit of purchasing two pieces per product i.e. not more than two sizes (shoes/garments) or pieces (accessories) per product per customer. The shopping limit covers the entire Lanvin for H&M collection. Your place in line does not guarantee any items from the Lanvin for H&M collection.

A True Prince Charming...

I was beside myself this morning when I read that Prince William proposed to his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton. The couple has been dating on and off for the last eight years.

I was even more overjoyed when I read his statement about proposing to Kate with his mother's ring. The Prince stated "It was my way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on today's excitement and the life we would spend together."

How beautiful and sweet is that, I literally DIED!

I can't wait to see this Royal wedding unfold. From the dress, to the venue, it will all be wonderful I'm sure. I hope everyone's Big moment is as special as there's seem to have been.Until then, I intend to live vicariously through Kate :)

Brow Perfection!!

When I was in High school I had an accident that involved my slamming into an emergency exit door (the really big metal ones). This further resulted in my getting three stitches along the line of my right eyebrow... (Yes, it hurt!)

I managed to deal with the pain of the injury but what I couldn't bear was my new found eyebrow patch... (it looks similar to this) I thought my world had come to end. This was almost as bad as the time when I made my hair fall out, but that's another story!

Bella Says Yes To The Dress!

A sketch that Zac Posen did for Instyle magazine on what his ideal Twilight wedding gown would look like.

There's been a ton of buzz lately regarding the wedding dress that Kristen Stewart will wear in the upcoming Breaking Dawn as she exchanges vows with her undead fiance. Most sources point to Zac Posen (who I love!)

as being the designer chosen to create the gown, which should be rather traditional and conservative in keeping with "Edward's" 150 year old tastes.

I would also expect it to be slightly different and quirky, if you remember the engagement ring, you'll know what I mean.

Unfortunately, some sources are also throwing the "U" word around, calling the final dress choice not only ugly, but hideous!
I'm hoping that maybe some people aren't understanding that the dress is meant to be a throwback to another era. In the book the dress is described as "Victorian" meaning lots of lace and tulle. It just isn't going to be something super sexy and modern like a Pnina Tornai, if a high neckline offends you, you're probably out of luck.

On the other hand, for some reason final wardrobe choice goes to Stefenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight novels, who has been lambasted in the past for her fashion choices in the previous Twilight movies. It may be time for her to turn the fashion reigns over to the professionals.

Iman Graces The Pages Of The November Issue Of Harper's Bazaar.

Iman sat down with Simon Doonan for an interview on life, love, and her new T.V. show The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection . Which will air on Bravo Tuesday nights at 10pm.

Of course this show was clearly created to replace Project Runway, which defected from Bravo to Lifetime 2 seasons ago. The show is a total knockoff.
As a Project Runway fan, I would ordinarily stay loyal to the original, however they have been seriously disappointing me with their choices for which contestants are eliminated and for winner. So, I'm definitely looking for a new love baby!
Besides, how can you not love Iman?

Iman is a legend, an entrepreneur, and a style icon. She is also the host, along with Isaac Mizrahi, of Bravo's The Fashion Show. She's so insanely fabulous that she has even designed a home collection—because who doesn't want to live in her house? But who is the woman behind the flawlessly glamorous facade?

Simon Doonan: How many times a day do you Google yourself?

Iman: Every five minutes. I simply can't take my eyes off myself. Kidding! I would rather Google other people than Google myself.

SD: Have you ever thrown a cell phone at anyone?

SD: Do you and David ever fight? [Iman has been married to rock god David Bowie for 18 years.]

Iman: David doesn't fight. He is English, so he just stays quiet. I'm the screamer. Then he always makes me laugh. It's like cabaret. I keep him entertained too. I still fancy him—totally!—after all these years.

SD: Which Bowie song do you adore?

Iman: So many! "Heroes" especially. "Suffragette City" always gets me dancing with my little girl, Lexi [age 10].

SD: Who takes more time to get ready?

Iman: David takes five minutes. Me? I don't do anything by myself. I have a whole crew to get me ready every day.

SD: How many falls and wiglets do you own?

Iman: Millions! I believe in glamour. I am in favor of a little vanity. I don't rely on just my genes. Looking good is a commitment to yourself and to others. Wigs, killer heels, Pilates, even fillers—whatever works for you, honey.

SD: What is the worst thing about being a parent?

Iman: The early mornings. There is soccer and music class at 7:30 A.M. Remember, I am 55. I can only take so much!

SD: I have seen you throw together a home-cooked meal in your kitchen. I was impressed. Was that just for PR purposes?

Iman: I vowed to myself when I got married that I would cook every night. I find it very therapeutic.

SD: What's for dinner tonight?

Iman: Branzino with lemon. And David likes risotto, but I can't do risotto tonight. It takes time, and I have homework to do with my daughter. Maybe a salad and orzo. And David buys dessert.

SD: You could be a lady of leisure if you so desired. Why not just lie around eating bonbons and listening to Ziggy Stardust?

Iman: Even Ziggy Stardust would put on 125 pounds if he ate bonbons all day! I come from Somalia. We start working young, and we understand that kind of life. I would be bored to death not doing anything creative.

SD: I heard rumors that you are doing a home collection.

Iman: When I stopped modeling in '89, I got really into decor. Our home is very eclectic. My collection, Iman Home, is launching fabrics first. I made myself a turban out of one fabric.

SD: Who have you ever had homicidal feelings toward in the fashion business?

Iman: Geoffrey Beene! I loved his clothes but not him. Years ago, we were about to walk the runway and he pushed me. I said, "Don't do that!" "You work for me!" he said, and I replied, "No, you've hired my services, dear. I don't work for you," and I left.

SD: Who is your favorite young designer these days?

Iman: Alexander Wang is one of my favorites. But he is like my daughter. He is like 12.

SD: I heard you were at the White House a while ago. Did you crash, or were you invited?

Iman: Cheeky! I met Mr. and Mrs. Obama years ago at Oprah's Legends Ball. Oprah sat me next to Mrs. Obama because I majored in political science before modeling, so she thought we would have something to discuss. And then I went for lunch at the White House. It was brilliant! Mrs. Obama could not have been more gracious or beautiful. She is very smart, and for me, the thing I most envy is her children. When is the last time we saw two girls that age at the inauguration, and their mother did not have to say, "Sit still!" ?

SD: Are you a true New Yorker or a Somali girl?

Iman: Absolutely a New Yorker. I can tell you exactly when I switched. We moved downtown when Lexi was born. When 9/11 happened, 12 of our neighborhood firemen were killed. I looked around at the country that had adopted me and I became an American.

SD: You seem like an optimist and a positive force, but you must have done something appallingin your past.

Iman: I was once very rude to a young model. Just before I retired from modeling, I was at this shoot. The photographer said he was reading a biography of Marie Antoinette. The young model asked us, "What agency is she with?" [Shrieks of derisive laughter] We made fun of her, of course! When we were leaving, she said to me, "I hope I look as good as you when I'm your age," and I said, "Don't worry, darling, you won't." And then later I felt bad.

SD: When Diana Vreeland first saw you, she said, "Now, that's a neck." Is it ever weird having such a long neck?

Iman: My daughter likes to draw. She'll say to me, "I am doing a portrait, so you have to sit still." And then she'll say, "Oh my goodness, you have such a long neck. Weird!"

SD: Have you ever dropped acid?

Iman: No, but I have dropped a lot of other things. I did the whole Studio 54 thing. My saving grace was that I always knew when to leave the party.

SD: Who do you idolize?

Iman: My father. He taught me how to be a parent and gave me a positive connection with men because he is a gentleman. And that is what attracted me to David. He is a gentle soul.

SD: Can you tell me about your new Bravo show? What's your sign-off catchphrase?

Iman [lowering her voice and striking a serious glamour pose] : "I am sorry … you are out of fashion. "

SD: Ouch!

The Remaking Of W.

This morning saw the online debut of the short film The Remaking of W as the main attraction at Fashion on Film, W’s virtual film festival.
The film shows a behind the scenes look at what it's like to work for the magazine as well as documenting the first few months at W for new editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi, who took the reins at the magazine last April.

Tonchi seems determined to keep W relevant in this increasingly paperless world of to the second Internet information. Smartly, he'll do this by moving with the times and making W online an equally valid and important part of your fashion world.
Tonchi's idea for the future of W is "to become your Fashion YouTube: a well-curated haven for the best videos in style, art, design, cinema, music, and, of course, fashion."

Since H.S., I have consistently played with my style trying to find the best look for me, above is a collage of photos of my style over the years.

Some of us are fortunate enough to have a vast array of styles that complement our figure while others have to stick with one or two silhouettes. In Hollywood, many of the fashion critics frown upon those actresses that seem to stick to one red carpet formula, (not really venturing outside "the box", or their comfort zone). Reviewing the pictures from MTV's Europe Music Awards I felt like I was looking at footage from the worlds worst outfits awards. It was really a worse and worser situation, as you can see by the foolishness that Ke$ha and Katy Perry showed up wearing.

There were some bright spots in the fashion landscape though, see below for my personal faves.

Rihanna looking amazing in a Marchesa gown. When does a Marchesa gown not look amazing right? But this one really takes the eye away from her Wilma Flintstone hair-don't.
In all seriousness, she looks great.

And surprise! Check out Miley Cyrus in Dolce and Gabbana.
I never expected fabness to come from her sector, but I love that she proved me wrong! The outfit is an awesome mix of elegance and cool, so even though she's covered up, it doesn't come off as old looking. I hope more young stars follow her lead. You don't have to show everyone your breasts just to prove you have them! Showing this level of taste and style makes me think of her as far more mature than any skintight catsuit ever could.

The heat is on! The fashion world is buzzing with excitement over the Lanvin H&M collaboration, and celebs like Madonna and Jennifer Lopez want a piece of the action! Unfortunately for them, it appears they'll have to wait just like the rest of us.

They were both denied advanced pieces from the collection, being told that no one would be receiving anything until after the runway show November 18th.

So why have British B-listers, singer/songwriters Roisin Murphy and Sophie-Ellis Bextor already been photographed wearing the goods!?

Blake Lively does not employ a stylist, so she's out here flying solo. I respect her creative gangsta, this look is definitely different.

Some have commented that this outfit appears too "walk of shame", and although I do see why one might say that, I don't think that really holds any weight. There are tons of cosmetics and lingerie inspired clothing created for the sole purpose of making you look "tryst-y", (yes I made that up) no need to get persnickety now. Besides, if nothing else it's gotten her noticed.

So skanky jokes not withstanding, I think the look is a bit weird, but there's something kinda cute about it too. I feel like she was on to something, and maybe she almost had it. What do you think?

BTW, this edition of Hot Or Not is very near and dear to my heart as I've been eyeing an awesome Internet deal on what I believe to be this very same skirt!

We still have a few weeks of waiting until the Lanvin for H&M collection hits stores Nov. 23rd, but for those of you who are scratching and shimmying in anticipation, the look book is here!

OK. #Kamilahfacts: I dislike waiting in line. I dislike crowds more. I especially dislike digging through messy racks of clothing, and the people who are inevitably in your way also digging through the same messy rack, and who you have to have the "are you going to move back so I can pass or am I moving for you?" showdown. It's too intense. I mean, I'm winning the showdown and all, but still...

Point being, although these high end designer collaborations with stores at the other end of the price point spectrum are often appealing, I have never made it a point to check them out on the first day. Besides, the garments rarely live up to their full-price counterparts, neither in design nor in materials. Why would I elbow someone right in the nose over that?

But Alber Elbaz, the creative director of Lanvin and the man who resurrected the label in 2001, seeks to make me change my mind. His intention in doing the H&M collaboration is to add a luxury range to H&M, not to take Lanvin downmarket. Allegedly, this is not dress for less.

He commented to The New Yorker last year “I have a problem to do a collection that is a secondary line. I mean, you don’t want to be the stepsister. You want to be Cinderella. Show me one girl who wants to be the stepsister,” leading many to believe that he would never do a collaboration with H&M. But it seems that he will try his best to bring a true sense of Lanvin to the masses, just this once.

In an interview with WWD, Elbaz says “I’m in an industry of dreams and excitement and love and beauty. I’m not feeling that I’m a part of this mega industry of billion dollars. At Lanvin, we’re an independent company — we are very far from this.” "Ninety-five per cent of women cannot afford [Lanvin] so let them have a taste. It's like if I was living in a palace and opened some doors and said, 'Have tea with me, taste the food'."

How very Marie Antoinette of him! I'll be considering waiting outside those palace doors, I do love cake.

So anyway, I remember the intense buzz when these KILLERS! came out. Would I have liked a pair? Sure! Unfortunately, limited was not the word for them, and as anyone who knows me can tell you I am DONE,(trying to be done) DONE, I tell you, with these wallet busting heels that I cant walk in and never wear.

Many donated to charity in the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti, but months later many Haitians are still homeless and hungry. Instead of spending $5.00 on something frivolous today, give to someone who really needs it.

Elizabeth Schaeffer Brown's initiative, Choose Haiti, is relatively new, but is quickly gaining tons of support. Earthquake survivors are being paid to pick up the newspapers and bottles that litter their streets and make bracelets out of them. The bracelets in turn are being sold at retail outlets such as Forever 21, Footlocker, and QVC.

In the last 4 weeks 10,000 bracelets have been sold, with plans to sell at least 1 million.This will provide work for 3000 Haitians still living in tents, while simultaneously encouraging them to clean up their streets.

I am so happy that sequins have become an acceptable form of dress for daytime. I can now give a few pieces in my closet maximum exposure.

This week I wore a sequined dress to work and was very happy with the way I paired it. Sequins can be tricky! If you are unsure of how to make this look work for you I have prepared a few tips on ways you can accessorize by toning down and offsetting the glitzy glam of sequined clothing.

I am wearing thigh high boots in this photo. This item is yet another piece that has become a more acceptable staple during the daytime, especially in NY with our brutally cold winters. Thankfully they have outlived and risen above the shame of the character that Julia Roberts portrayed in "Pretty Woman".

My office is a little more laid back with their dress code which is why I took the liberty of pairing them with this outfit. In a more conservative environment I would have paired my outfit with booties or pumps. I may have also worn a black blazer and tights. With the denim jacket I wanted to break up the all black monotony. See pics below for the alternate option I just described.

Here is Kourtney Kardashian shopping at Jeffrey in NYC. Full skirts of all lengths are hot for Fall. Choose one that ends above the knee to make a perfect pairing with another huge fall trend, stockings! No need to show leg and cleavage simultaneously, at least not during the day, so choose a top that covers the twins.

I wore a similar outfit recently, because my skirt was plaid I chose to steer clear of the button downs or ties, I didn't want to take it to far into catholic school territory. Instead I chose a cap sleeve knit, with pearl detail near the collar.
My skirt is by Kinsey, the top is from INC. both available at Macy's. I picked my stockings up at H&M, and the booties (which I know you don't have a clear view of, sorry) are Giuseppe Zannotti.

*Sidebar: I really used to love Jeffrey, but there is an extremely rude sales manager(? short, fat, bald) working there. Despite the fact that he would greet me with the perfunctory air kiss whenever I walked in, I one day overheard him whisper to the salesperson helping me that he'd "chosen the wrong customer."
Well excuse me Fatty two by four! I may not buy 10 pairs at a time, but I am a regular customer, and my money is as green as anyone else's. Maybe he hadn't noticed that there are no shortages of shoe stores in NYC. I can, and did take my money elsewhere! End rant*

I absolutely love the new look of drapes that is currently coming down the runways. From Lanvin, Roland Mouret to Givenchy. I really think that if done well they can be quite breathtaking. From skirts to dresses and the like. Draping is not for every body type, so it may not necessarily look great on everyone, but in my humble opinion (IMHO) if you have a little height and a great pair of legs it might just work for you.

Last month I came across a photo in People Magazine of the fabulous Dree Hemingway that prompted me to do an look inspired by her. Not one to shy away from a challenge I was on the hunt for the perfect draped skirt.

After searching I finally found the perfect look that I thought was a great marriage between my personal style and the look that Dree wore.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable week. I for one am more than ecstatic that this week has come to a close. Economy is getting better... there goes the discounts!!!

Hello My Dear Friends,

I heard on the news that the economy is progressively becoming stronger and stronger with each passing day. I witnessed this for myself two days ago when I walked pass my usual sidewalk-bum on my way to work. On Tuesday he was neatly tucked away in a cardboard box with his feet dangling. Wednesday he was in a 500 thread count comforter with quilted socks. By the looks of things, we may be doing better than we imagined.

Under normal circumstances I would jump for joy upon hearing such news; however, I am selfishly thinking about the toll this news will take on my spending habits. Already I've noticed that there aren't nearly as many sample sales this year as there were last year. The law regarding no tax payment being required on clothing over a hundred dollars has recently been overturned. Things are not looking too good for us fashion enthusiast's on a budget. Despite this cloud looming over our heads, I have figured out a way to still potentially save money on big ticket items.

During the recession and probably before that there has been several launches of online discount sites. These very sites have been my life saver a time or two. Additionally they have minimized the "Sale" fights among women.

Most of the sites try to exemplify an air of exclusivity by mandating that each potential customer register and sign up in order to preview/shop the items on sale. A small price to pay for a great bargain. The same rules for return and exchange usually hold true with these sites as well. Below are a listing of such sites. On last weeks episode of Dancing With The Stars R&B singer Brandy revealed that she had not been "intimate" with a man in 6 years.
Life And Style magazine jumped right on that quote and followed up with an interview where Brandy explained further.

"I haven't been with a man seriously and in love in six years. And, honestly, I tend to abstain if I'm not in a relationship." Brandy admitted she hasn't been celibate all that time, but... "It's been a long time. We're talking years."

I'm all for remaining celibate when not in a committed relationship, but I'm thinking if it's taking you so many years to find someone you feel comfortable being intimate with there may be bigger problems afoot here. Perhaps a fear of repeating past skanky mistakes? Or maybe it's a matter of unrealistic expectations?

If she's telling the truth, I do respect her decisions. She is a mother after all, and this means not just choosing a mate who is compatible with you, but with your children also. However, I do believe that if you are someone who would like a relationship, and are unable to find anyone suitable for years on end, that it may be best to look within. Self evaluation is necessary from time to time.

Banned In The USA?

Kanye West stirs up controversy once again, as the cover art for his new album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" is released.

Although West has been making a fuss via twitter, it seems that in reality the cover was not so much "banned" as it is being frowned upon. West's record label Universal Music Group’s Island Def Jam, has been strongly urging him to consider using a different cover amidst concerns that family oriented retailers such as Wal-Mart will refuse to carry the album as is.

Understandable from any company that their first priority would be their bottom line. Allegedly he was told that if he refused to change the cover art, his label would ultimately stand behind him.

So in this age of digital downloads is Wal-Mart really that serious? Kanye doesn't seem to think so, he tweeted: "In all honesty ... I really don't be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album covers #Kanyeshrug!,"

Personally, I'm not in love with this cover myself. #Kamilahshrug

Yesterday I went on my usual Sunday shopping adventure. Unfortunately, I didn't find any clothing, shoes, and/or accessories to purchase so I was kind of bummed. I was in the vicinity of 5th avenue and 19th Street. I went to Zara, H&M, Anthropologie, Club Monaco, Kenneth Cole and the Gap and still I came out empty-handed. I do believe that my not finding anything was partially due to the heavy crowds in most of the stores. I should have expected that as yesterday was a beautiful day. Tired, beaten and hungry I decided to walk back to my car and head home when I saw it...

Who knew that this existed in NYC? I can't even find pizza for a $1 in Brooklyn. It turns out today wasn't their grand opening. In fact they've been there for quite some time now. They are located on 6th Avenue between 17th and 18th street. While it's not the best pizza I've ever had it is far from the worst. I would give it 3 1/2 stars out of a possible 5. If ever your in the neighborhood be sure to check it out. It's cheap, quick, tasty pizza. You can't go wrong with that.

Hi guys,

I know it's late and I should have done this on Saturday. However, I have been looking at the roundup of Celeb photos this week and I wanted to introduce my pick for "Favorite Shoe of the Week,(FSOTW)."

It is none other than the United Nude "Iris" shoe designed by Iris van Herpen. Iris is a designer from the Netherlands. After having cultivated her skills under Viktor & Rolf and Alexander McQueen. She is now progressing internationally; having completed 5 collections in Amsterdam and Tokyo. I look forward to seeing a lot more of this designer and her avant garde fashion palette.

Today I had my morning workout and it did not include running, sit-ups or any exercise machines. My mom has been telling me about the benefits of facial yoga for some time now and she decided to look into it. We found a few ( ok, more like twenty-something) youtube vids of Jack Lalanne, an icon in the exercise world. This man was truly ahead of his time. He explains the importance of exercising the muscles in our faces so that we can stay firm and prevent sagging. Ladies ladies ladies - I have a problem.
I can't even lie when I tell you how excited I got when I saw this Train Case from Urban Decay. If you are a true makeup junkie then you know how expensive a good makeup case can be; this one is only $49 AND its super cute! Here is why this works - make up cases usually have these compartments that are so difficult to really organize with because some packaging and brushes just don't quite conform to standard sizes. I have all sorts of powders and brushes that are just too big to put in most cute little makeup bags. Another plus with this Train Case is the durability and the promise that it cleans up nicely. Good morning darlings!

Hope your weekend was wonderful and your Monday goes quickly and painlessly!

You probably spent yesterday reviewing the pics from your Saturday of fun; hitting DELETE on more than a few. Ever wonder why you can leave the house looking your best and then when your friends whip out the digi cam your look gets lost in translation??? The fact is that while you may be stunning, have great skin and look just fine in person, most women need a little something to have that translated into photos - look at how much models have to wear for photoshoots! Whether it's a little shine control, a case of face not matching your neck or dark under eye circles; here are a few pointers to put your best face forward:

1- If you have great skin and prefer not to pile on the makeup - carry some shine control powder or those blotters that absorb oil. MAC has blotting powder that comes either in a pressed compact or loose powder. Sephora has a few options for blotting sheets but I like Boscia's Fresh Blotting Linens and they are only $10 while some other brands are near $30.

2- A lot of foundations have SPF ingredients in them and while that is absolutely essential during the day; at night ... not so much. The thing is that the ingredients that your foundation contain also create what looks like a white film over your face when you take pics. Think of those sunblocks that are really high in SPF and how white and chalky those are. So for night time choose a foundation with no SPF. MAC Cosmetics has Full Coverage Foundation that is actually used by the pros for its opaque coverage and for looking amazing in photographs. Now this may be heavy for some who are not makeup wearers but the end result will be better looking photos!

[Remember when using heavy foundation never forget blush so that you don't look monotone]

3- Protect ya neck! Even if you use a close matching foundation you should always use some past your jawline and blend into your neck so you don't have this hard line where you foundation ends. You can even brush a little on your decolletage area if you'd like.

4- Under eye circles, bags, or even wrinkles can be exaggerated in photos. I never realized that this was an issue until a few months ago when I was in my cousins wedding and the makeup artist piled on the under eye concealer and it looked really light to the naked eye; but in the pictures it looked fabulous. I looked awake and brighter; plus it makes the eye makeup stand out even more. If you have ever seen celebrities or models getting their make up done you always see them with this super light powder under their eyes. Makeup artists use that to catch some of the fall out from dark shadows, liners or mascara flakes but when they brush it out the under eye area is still pretty light. Look at how sexy this cat eye looks; their eyes really pop:

5- ALWAYS define your eyebrows. If you have none - draw them in. There are are products that have stencils that are natural looking like Anastasia's Classic Stencils. Even if you have well defined brows you should groom them with eyebrow gel so they stay put. Remember: your eyebrows should be a shade darker than your natural hair color (look at Eva Mendes' brow and hair color above.) Most of us have to darken them and define them a bit.

6- And of course: Keep your lip gloss poppin!
Now you're ready for your close up.

Ok let's see if my sister is a SGHI reader! LOL ;) So my sister has been using Aveda products and her hair has been looking REALLY good - not only is it super shiny and just stepped out of the salon nice; but it looks like it grew a lot too! So I did what any sister would do and I stole some of her Aveda shampoo and conditioner, and some of the leave-in treatment she has too; and I loved it! That was like two weeks ago, and I haven't done it since [I swear] but I have been debating on whether I should go get some of my own. As I was shopping on Aveda's site I came across this Dry Remedy Moisturizing System by Aveda which claims to improve dry hair by up to 63%. Now I know this won't smell as wonderful as the CHI treatment that I was talking about earlier - but Aveda products are natural and as I have experienced; they work wonders on hair. I think I am going to give this kit a shot. I will keep you guys posted on how it all turns out!

Summertime is the worst when you are trying to do your hair. Between hot weather, hot irons, hairdryers, it all becomes a hot sweaty mess... So when the three H's are in effect I like to skip all of that hair styling madness and just let my hair be natural. Unfortunately, with the wrong products this can leave me looking a hot mess. I tried Hair Milk from Carol's Daughter recently and have been using it pretty consistently. It gives my hair just the right amount of moisture so that it isn't too greasy or weighed down. My only complaint is its lemon scent, which isn't offensive, but just not my kinda smell I suppose ... All in all, I will be using this product for a while and am curious to check out some more hair products from CD now. How To Choose, And Use, The Right Foundation

Problem: Cream, stick, liquid, powder—what's the right formula for me?

Solution: Your skin type will tell you what to use.
If you're dry, choose a liquid, stick, or hydrating powder foundation. Liquids and sticks both have a creamy (moisturizing) consistency, and hydrating powders are blended with ingredients that deliver moisture to the skin and offer more coverage than regular pressed powders; look for clues like "compact makeup" or "foundation" on the product packaging. (Clinique Supermoisture Makeup, $23, is a good one.)

If your skin is oily, use oil-free liquid or powder foundation. They contain powders that absorb oil, leaving you with a matte, smooth finish, says Ni'Kita Wilson, a cosmetic chemist at Cosmetech Labs in Fairfield, New Jersey. (Try Clarins Truly Matte Foundation, $34.) Mineral makeup often works well on oily skin, because the dry particles absorb moisture, says Ranella Hirsch, MD, president elect of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology & Aesthetic Surgery. (Try Almay Pure Blends Mineral Makeup, $12.50.) If you're prone to breakouts, use a foundation that contains salicylic acid. "It dries up the oil-producing glands that cause pimples," Hirsch says. (Try Neutrogena SkinClearing Oil-Free Makeup, $11.50.)

If you have combination skin, strategically apply a powder foundation, which allows you to distribute more of the oil-absorbing makeup where you need it and less where you don't, without leaving visible lines (as a liquid or stick foundation would).

If you're a novice, try a powder foundation that's right for your skin type. "It's the easiest to apply, and it disappears into the skin more easily than liquid formulas," says New York City makeup artist Mally Roncal. Next easiest is a cream foundation in a compact (which is great for dry complexions). It melts into the skin like a liquid, but because it's a solid and applied with a sponge, it's easy to control. (Try Estée Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme Ultra Firming Crème Compact Makeup SPF 15, $34.)

Problem: After a hug, it looks as if my face has come off on my husband's suit jacket.

Solution: Press a naked velvet puff to your face after applying foundation.It will help absorb any excess and push the foundation into the skin. Or you can use a puff or brush to apply a light veil of translucent powder, which will set the foundation.

Problem: I'm completely confused by makeup-speak. What the heck is a "finish," and how do I figure out which one I want?

Solution: A finish is the kind of sheen (or lack of it) a foundation leaves on your skin. There are three types: semimatte, matte, and luminizing.
Most foundations are semimatte, and they work on almost anyone. "It looks the most natural," says New York City makeup artist Paul Innis. (If the packaging doesn't say that it's matte or luminizing, assume it's semimatte.)

Matte foundations absorb oil, leaving your skin with an even, powdery finish. Look for "poreless" and "shine-free" on the label. If you have dry or mature skin, choose a matte formula enriched with moisturizers.

If your skin lacks luster (whether it's dry, mature, or sallow), consider a foundation with a luminizing finish. Infused with finely ground light-reflective particles (such as mica and crushed pearls), it diffuses the look of fine lines and wrinkles. (Try Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Powder, $44, or Guerlain Parure Compact Foundation with Crystal Pearls SPF 20, $58.)

Problem: By the time I leave the house in the morning, my foundation has settled into my lines and wrinkles, making me look as if I just emerged from an Egyptian tomb.

Solution: Don't try to fill in those areas with makeup.
Apply less makeup on crow's-feet and marionette lines, and keep those areas well moisturized, says Laura Mercier, a New York City makeup artist.

Problem: My foundation always looks fake. I'm sure it's because I can't find the right shade!

Solution: Go straight to a department store for professional help. The foundation will cost more than at a drugstore, but the initial investment is worth it. You can use your purchase as a guide for buying a less expensive foundation in the future. (For the most precise match, try Prescriptives Custom Blend service, $62. A professional blender hand-mixes several pigments to create your custom foundation in 20 minutes. The formula is saved in the company's database.)

For women of color, many foundations are unsuitable and often leave an ashy finish, says Ashunta, a celebrity makeup artist for Dior, because of the wide range of undertones in dark skin. (She recommends DiorSkin Fluide Mocha #800, $41; it works with many different African-American complexions. The new CoverGirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Compact Foundation, $8, is specially formulated with low levels of titanium dioxide, the ingredient that causes ashiness.)

Problem: My face looks as powdered as a sugared doughnut.

Solution: Once you've dipped your brush or sponge into powder foundation, immediately tap it to get rid of excess particles that give that overly dusted look. Also, if you have peach fuzz (as many women do), sweep the powder in the direction that the hair grows, not against it. Going against the follicles inadvertently fluffs up those hairs, creating a little cushion for the powder to settle on.

Problem: Suddenly, my face is one color, my neck another—not a great look.

Solution: Check your foundation shade against your jawline, says New York City makeup artist Paula Dorf, and adjust the color. Your skin color may change with the seasons, especially during the summer (even if you use sunscreen).

Problem: I've got a moisturizing formula in the right shade, but my foundation still looks splotchy and caked.

Solution: Prepare your skin before you apply foundation.
First, slough off dead skin cells once or twice a week so makeup goes on evenly. Second, use a moisturizer with SPF—even if your foundation has one. "To get adequate sun protection, you'd have to use too much of the makeup," says Hirsch. Third, slip on a primer. A light gel or lotion, primer makes foundation go on more evenly and last longer by creating a smooth base for the pigment to adhere to. Massage a pea-size amount onto your face. Let it absorb before you apply foundation. New York City makeup artist Mathew Nigara specifically looks for primers made with silicone, which fills in pores and lines and illuminates the skin, giving you an airbrushed look. (Too Faced's Wrinkle Injection, $27, a silicone-based primer, feels especially silky.)

If you use concealer, apply it after the primer but before foundation. To hide dark circles or hyperpigmentation, dot a bit of concealer on those areas, then blend. Step back and take a look: How much foundation do you really need now? You'll probably find you need less than you thought you did, says Nigara.

Problem: I'm trying to conceal rosacea, and it isn't working.

Solution: For the heaviest coverage, look for brands like Cover Fx and Dermablend. They're packed with pigment (containing 40 and 25 percent, respectively), are water resistant, and last for 12 to 16 hours (so a little goes a long way). Many earlier incarnations had a texture like bathtub caulking, but new formulations are remarkably light.

Problem: Should I use my fingers to apply it? A sponge? A brush?

Solution: Each method has its pros and cons.Use your fingers to apply liquid and cream foundations, because the heat generated helps to warm up the pigment, making it easy to blend.

Use a sponge if you want a sheer look; it absorbs a lot of the foundation, taking down its intensity. But since you'll go through your foundation much quicker, apply with a sponge only on days you want minimal coverage. Lightly press it into the skin in a blotting motion. (Sweeping the sponge across your face will create streaking.) If you want a dewier look, dampen the sponge with water before dipping it into the foundation.

Use a brush for depositing the pigment most evenly. For liquid foundation, choose a tapered synthetic brush with a tip about one and a half inches long. (The tapered tip allows you to get into the areas around your nose and under your eyes, and the synthetic bristles don't absorb too much product.) Tap the end of the brush into the foundation and "paint" it across your forehead, down your nose, across your cheekbones, and on your chin. In sweeping motions, blend the pigment into the skin until it's invisible. For powder foundations, use a thick, fluffy brush—it imparts a soft, seamless finish, Mercier says. Choose one made of natural bristles; they're porous, so they grip the powder, preventing you from depositing too much. In a circular, buffing motion, swirl the brush against your face, starting from the center.

Problem: When I use a foundation brush, I wind up with brushstrokes all over my face.

Solution: "Eliminate brushstrokes by pressing your palm gently into your skin as if you were using a puff," says Dorf.

And next time, go easy: If you have brushstrokes or swirl marks, you're using too much.

I tried the 20 Lash by M-A-C yesterday and I loved them. This is a half lash that you apply to the outer corner of your eyes for a winged effect. There are a few reasons to go with the 20's; first off, It doesn't feel like you are wearing false lashes at all! They also felt like they fit right into place and I didn't feel worried that they might fall off - maybe because its a short lash its easier to place it and therefore easier to secure, but they were so great that I even forgot I had them on. Secondly, they are a lot easier to put on since it doesn't have to be so precise. Since they end half way along your lash line, it is a lot less difficult to notice where they start. Lastly, having longer lashes at the outer corner of your eyes is glamorous without looking fake or obvious. If you have shorter lashes you may ask the nice people at M-A-C to cut them down slightly so they blend better. These, like other M-A-C lashes are reusable but I wouldn't go past 3 uses because of bacteria and stuff. I would definitely recommend these and will be using these for future events instead of the full lashes.

Dean created these conditioners because he says that traditional shampoos have chemicals that strip, damage, and dry our hair out. WEN is a product that cleanses your hair without stripping it of its natural oils. In the shower let your hair soak completely, then work the WEN into you scalp and all the way through to your ends. Your hair length and texture determines the number of pumps needed. The cleansers don't lather up like traditional shampoos so it is strange the first time you use it. I was over at AllWomenStalk when I saw this article on how to dress on a plane.
I think it's a shame that sleepwear-like casual attire has become the travel standard of so many, that it has become acceptable to visit another city or country dressed like a homeless person just because "it's comfortable".
Pajamas are for bed, and an airport/airplane is not a bed or any kind of private space you can pretend is a bed. Look polished at all times. Do it for yourself.

Wherever you are, appearances matter, even more so when you’re on a plane. Dress well, and you’ll be the first person considered for an upgrade if one becomes available, and air stewardesses will respond more positively to you. Make sure you look the part!!

2. Do not wear a tracksuit …

However comfortable it is, tracksuits never look good. Even designer tracksuits shouldn’t be worn while traveling. Pick your boarding outfit carefully. Well fitting, tailored trousers will look smart as well as being comfortable, or a smart pair of dark colored jeans. If you are on a very long flight, you can always change into sweatpants when you’re on your way!

3. Wear cashmere …

Cashmere is soft, comfortable and stylish. Wearing a light pink, cream or white cashmere jumper will look classy and ensure you’ll be comfortable for the entire flight. You could also wear a large cashmere scarf, but again stick to pale, neutral colors.

4. Wear ballet flats …

Ballet shoes are available in so many colors and styles now that whatever you’ve chosen to wear there will be a perfect style available. They will be more comfortable and stylish than trainers, and will hurt your feet a lot less than heels!! You can also slip them off if you want to relax your feet, and they don’t take up much room if you want to swap footwear just before you get off.

5. Don’t forget big sunglasses …

Whether you sleep all the way through or you don’t sleep at all, nobody looks their best while on flights. Good quality sunglasses will protect your eyes from the harsh lights, making it easier to sleep, and preventing puffed up eyes. My sunglasses are always the first thing I pack, they make me look effortlessly stylish during the flight and are lifesavers when I’m being too lazy to put my make up back on!

6. Make Up!

Get a cute make up bag and make sure you pack it with essentials. When you get on board, you’ll need to take off your make up, and moisturize a couple of times during your flight. Toothpaste and a toothbrush will keep you feeling fresh, and make sure you’ve got some deodorant. And of course check that you’ve got make up to put back on before you get off!! It’s worth checking the current guidelines on what you can take onboard, and check all your make up passes.

7. A clutch …

Just something simple and chic that will hold your money, your credit cards and your tickets. Make sure it’s in a neutral color and will go will all of your outfits.

8. A well sized bag …

The Louis Vuitton speedy was made for this purpose. A bag that’s big enough to hold your clutch, your make up bag, your iPod, your phone, magazines and books is a must to keep everything together and organized. Again, stick to stylish, neutral tones.

9. Don’t forget about socks …

Make sure you have warm, comfortable socks on, however long your flight lasts. You could also invest in a pair of special flight socks, which maintain circulation in your legs.
By now, you should be ready to fly. Get a good night’s sleep and check your flight time and when you have to be at the airport the night before, and have fun!

Shu Uemura Brightening Cleansing Oil (Dammit!)

Ugh! I swear, it never fails that Avyanka or Alicia will post about something that I was just about to get to! Thanks Avyanka.(If you could see me I'm sticking my tongue out at you.)
Anyway, I bought Shu Uemura's Brightening Cleansing Oil about 2 weeks ago, and I've just been waiting to see what the results were before I wrote about it. I can say first hand that I really like the oil cleanser. I consider myself to have oily skin, so I was a bit apprehensive about rubbing any extra grease on my face, but it rinses very clean, leaving your skin soft. It is also excellent at removing makeup, especially mascara. Removing my eyeliner is always a bitch though and it continues to be that way.
So there are about 10 different cleansing oils, with varying ingredients that you can choose for your skin type. I chose this brightening one because it was supposed to remove any dark spots (like from a fading blemish) and brighten dull skin. I have noticed nothing of the sort, but that is not to say this is not a good product, I just think I would try a different formulation when I buy it again. Probably the pink one which is made for oily skin.

Final say, It's a keeper just for its basics. Removes makeup, moisturizes, leaves skin soft and clears pores. It's the "extras" I'm unsure of. Also, your hands and face have to be completely dry when you apply it, which is more annoying than it sounds. Trust me.

8 Signs You Are Dating The Wrong Person

Is there a nagging voice inside you? Something telling you that maybe this person you're spending time with isn't the best person for you to be with? That there's someone better? That your current relationship isn't what you had dreamed for yourself? If so, then these are probably feelings you want to explore further. Here are eight signs that you are dating the wrong person.

1. You're not Happy
This is a great place to start. Someone who is dating the right person consistently enjoys the relationship and feels a general sense of happiness. We're not saying that they wouldn't argue or be upset with their partner occasionally; even the healthiest couples do that. And we're not saying that there wouldn't be times when a person in a good relationship would get down or struggle emotionally at some level. But generally speaking, a person who is in the right relationship is going to be happy. So if you find yourself unhappy much of the time – and especially when you're with your partner – then that's a fairly clear sign that this may not be the best person for you.

2.You don't feel good about yourself
In addition to feeling happy, a person in a good relationship usually has a positive self esteem. Sure, they will have doubts and insecurities, and they may even deal with some bigger questions about themselves. But the time they spend with their partner will make them feel better about themselves, not worse. In contrast, if your partner exacerbates your self doubts and undermines your confidence, then that's a major red flag that this is not a good person for you to be in a relationship with. You want someone who affirms and celebrates the great things about you, not someone who wrecks your self confidence and torpedoes your every attempt at growth.

3.The people you trust urge you to get out
If the people you trust and are closest to feel that you've found a good catch and therefore encourage the relationship, that's a good sign that you two may belong together. On the other hand, if the people who love you the most are begging you to get away from someone, then that person's probably not the one for you. Of course, sometimes your friends and family may choose someone for you who isn't a great match. In these cases, it's not always wise to follow their advice. But if they are the people you trust the most and who know you best, and they are urging you to get out of your current relationship, then you owe it to yourself to give their advice a serious listen.

4. You find yourself constantly thinking about someone else
It's not always the case that a person is wrong because of some sort of character flaw or personal defect. Sometimes, the problem is simply that the person isn't someone else. If you are dating one person but secretly wishing you were with somebody else, then that's a problem. It could be that it's an ex you're still carrying a torch for. Or maybe it's someone else in your life you wish you could be with. Regardless, if you are constantly (or even frequently) wishing you were dating a different person, then that's a sure-fire sign that your current relationship is not all it should be.

5. You find yourself denying facts you know to be true
This is the old "river in Egypt" problem-you're swimming in "de Nile." And it can happen to all of us. We know something is true, but we just can't bring ourselves to see it or admit it. Maybe you don't want to believe something negative about your partner, or you want to ignore the fact that all you two ever do is argue when you're together. Whatever the actual issue, if you are working hard to deny facts about your relationship that you know to be true, then you are probably dating the wrong person.

6. The cons of staying together outweigh the pros
A cost-benefit analysis can be helpful in situations other than at the office. Sit down for a few minutes and write down the advantages of continuing to date the person you are with. Then list the disadvantages. When you compare the lists, you might determine that the reasons to stay together are more compelling than the reasons to break up. But if the opposite appears to be the case, then let logic be your guide and move on to someone else.

7. Your instincts are saying get out
As a general rule, voices inside you are there for a reason, and they ought to be listened to. Sometimes an inner voice may tell us that we've found our soul mate, or simply that we should continue to pursue a relationship until we discover how fulfilling it can be. But sometimes, something within us is whispering (or even screaming) that we're dating the wrong person. If this is the case for you, then one of the worst things you can do is to ignore that voice. Give it free reign and let it direct you to the conclusion you may have already come to.

8. You already know the truth
It might be the case that at this point, you really don't know whether you are dating the wrong person. If so, then you may want to continue the relationship for a while longer so you two can explore whether you should be together. Relationships often take time to achieve their full potential. But you may determine that you are dating someone you should definitely not be dating. If so, then you need to be brave enough to do what you need to do, and end the relationship.

Find someone who treats you like you need to be treated and makes you happy. Someone who makes you feel good about yourself, and whom the people you trust encourage you to be with. Someone who, when you are really honest with yourself, you know deserves to become that special person in your life. When you find that person, you won't have to worry that you're dating the wrong person.

Hey guys,

Today I'd just like to talk. No, I'm not bringing you any info on sales, hair/nail products nor Gossip. Nothing of the sort, it's just you and me today. I want to talk about the fact that we are already in 2010, and going full speed ahead... Has anyone really sat down and accessed their life? Do you all have any New Years resolutions that you intend to stick to? For starters, I intend to make 2010 a better year than 2008. I will be taking an active step in going green. I've already began turning off the lights (Thanks Avy!) and unplugging my chargers. I would suggest that everyone who isn't already doing this, take this small step in saving energy. As it is a recession, I intend to cook more as opposed to dinning out... anyone that knows me is aware of how big of a deal this is for me, but I am willing to try it.

Physically - I intend to exercise more this year, I need to start getting a handle on my health and weight... we aren't exactly getting younger, you know :)
I'd also like to go Rock climbing, like on Gladiators :) I know it's no Mount Everest but hey, don't judge me it's a start. I know you guys have seen "Gladiators" I always wanted to go on that show.

Fun - I intend to go to the theater more often,just today on the news they were relaying that ticket prices are beginning to drop significantly in order to save Broadway. I intend to be apart of the audience that helps to save Broadway. I plan on taking at least two vacations per year.. and No, Jersey does not count...LOL

Spiritually - I will go to Church more often this year... Yes! I do go to church, although I am of no specific religion.. just a spiritual being.

Intellectually - Reading is one of my favorite pastimes; however, I tend to stick to a few select genres. This year I want to venture into different genres and become more enlightened with each book. That doesn't mean no more Romance Novel's, I just can't give up Brenda Jackson.

What about you guys, I'm interested in knowing what everyone is thinking of doing, to make '09 their best year to date. Maybe your resolution is something that I should be doing... maybe mine yours, who knows...

Lastly, I'd like to add that those of us who have families should make an effort to spend more time with them, other than around the holidays... Everyday counts!

Did those holiday pounds creep up on you? Over indulgence is normal this time of year, but lets get back on track, summer will be here before you know it.
As someone who has tried Atkins, I can definitely say it works! But at what cost? Check out this review of some of America's most popular diet plans, you may find one that's right for you.

The key to losing weight—and keeping it off—is to find the eating plan that fits your personality and lifestyle. To help, we've rounded up expert opinions on the pros and cons of the 10 most popular diets in America.

"All the popular diets can help you lose weight because they provide almost identical calorie intakes," says nutritional biochemist and author Shawn Talbott, Ph.D. "But different people may do better on different diets because of personal tastes. For instance, if you love bread, don't even think about trying Atkins … because it won't work."

Here's a look at the 10 most popular diets in America:

Jenny Craig
Tasty, ready-made meals and snacks—"Jenny's Cuisine"—are perks of Valerie Bertinelli and Queen Latifah's favorite diet (which is similar to NutriSystem). Amy Hendel, health expert and author of Fat Families, Thin Families (Benbella Books, 2008), sums it up: "No thinking, just eating."

Pros: Jenny Craig is a balanced, calorie-controlled diet with weekly consultations in person or by phone.

Cons: Jenny's Cuisine gets expensive (though a short-term stint could teach portion control). "Average people aren't under the same scrutiny as the celebrities who lost tons of weight, so the pressure to stay on track is decreased," says Hendel. In addition, participants may tire of the prepared meals and may not learn how to count calories outside the program.

Mediterranean Diet
Rather than focusing on calories, this healthy eating plan revolves around veggies, whole grains, olive oil, nuts, fish, poultry, and dairy—with limited red meats and moderate wine consumption.

Pros: The home cooking emphasis makes it inexpensive and easier to track fats, cholesterol, and sodium, says Hendel. Plus, these flavorful foods don't trigger feelings of deprivation. Nutritionist Haruko Oyama of Montefiore Medical Center says this diet is connected to numerous health benefits, such as decreased risks of cardiovascular disease, and possibly diabetes and Alzheimer's.

Cons: "The effect of the Mediterranean Diet on weight loss specifically hasn't been as widely researched as the health effects," says Oyama. Plus, people could take the freedom to eat healthy fats a little too far—and overdo it.

Zone Diet
You won't overdo it if you stay in the Zone: one gram of fat for every two grams of protein and three grams of carbohydrates, meant to balance hormones and control hunger.

Pros: New York City-based nutritionist and personal trainer Ariane Hundt says, "This diet promotes fat loss, reduces inflammation, increases energy, reduces cholesterol, and has anti-aging benefits." Plus, nutritionists generally favor healthy, balanced meals.

Cons: "The fat, protein, [and] carb groups are a little simplistic," says Hendel. "We need some calcium from dairy every day, and we need to separate grain-based carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables (the Zone counts them as one). And, limiting grains can be difficult to do over the long term. Most Zone-committed eaters seem to be highly motivated, physically active people who can afford the home-delivered meals."

Weight Watchers

This diet giant also sells its own pre-made meals plus books and magazines, and recently introduced the new Momentum program, replacing the traditional Flex and Core plans. Momentum revolves around the POINTS system and offers strategies for overcoming temptations. Diet coach Laurie Beebe, R.D., says, "Weight Watchers is effective because people can stay on it for years and keep the weight off."

Pros: Regular meetings offer information-driven discussions, weigh-ins, tools such as food tracking journals and activity calculators, and encouragement—plus Weight Watchers provides online support. Beebe confirms that the portion control, controlled calories, and accountability help people lose weight.

Cons: Each meeting costs about $10 (depending on your area), tools cost extra, and the POINTS system doesn't necessarily reflect the nutritional value of food.

Volumetrics
In this plan, nutrient-dense foods full of fiber, vitamins and minerals are encouraged (such as veggies, fruits, broth-based soups, nonfat milk, etc.), while energy-dense foods are in the no-fly zone (cheeseburgers, cookies, packaged foods, etc.).

Pros: It's a healthy, inexpensive way to lose weight. "Diets often fail because people feel hungry," says dietician Jodi Greebel, author of The Little Black Apron: A Single Girl's Guide to Cooking with Style and Grace (Polka Dot Press, 2007). "Volumetrics encourages large quantities of nutrient-dense foods, which fill you up. This plan also encourages food journals and exercising—two keys to permanent weight loss."

Cons: "Volume alone may not satisfy your taste buds," says Hundt, potentially leaving you vulnerable to those tempting fat, sugar, and salt cravings.

The Flat Belly Diet
Liz Vaccariello, editor-in-chief of Prevention magazine, co-wrote the book about this female-focused, Mediterranean-style diet. The claim: Eating monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) at every meal will flatten bellies without exercise. Meals are capped at 400 calories, foods that lead to bloating are discouraged, and participants are told to eat every four hours.

Pros: "Eating a specific number of calories regularly will help maintain energy levels, stabilize blood glucose levels, and prevent hunger," says Susan Kraus, a clinical dietitian at Hackensack University Medical Center. "Plus, the recipes are tasty, which keeps dieters satisfied."

Cons: Research doesn't prove that diets target specific body parts, and health experts aren't crazy about de-emphasizing exercise.

Weigh Down Diet
Satisfy your cravings here! "This diet focuses on portion sizes and hunger cues, which are very important for weight loss," says Greebel. All foods are allowed in this Higher Power–based diet; eating is motivated by the body's physical needs.

Pros: Kraus says dieters are encouraged to become more spiritual, stop obsessing about food, and take more responsibility for their eating habits.

Cons: Greebel points out that it's difficult to lose weight if you're not watching what you eat, even if you're careful with portion sizes. Kraus adds that people might need a more specific, structured plan to lose weight successfully.

South Beach Diet
If you need structure, here's one of the strictest diets on the market. Cardiologist Arthur Agatston's diet is divided into three phases: Eliminate Cravings, Lose Steadily, and Maintain. Strict guidelines about reduced-fat dairy, lean proteins, veggies and healthy fats are part of every phase.

Pros: "The core of this diet is a heart-health promoting, balanced diet that most people can follow if they don't mind the rules," says Hendel.

Cons: Dr. Jan Evans, R.D., of Richmond, Va., warns, "The first two phases are unhealthy, unbalanced, and not only cause fluid loss [and] dehydration, but can cause ketosis and electrolyte imbalance. The diet is too restrictive in the first two phases, and lacks essential nutrients."

Atkins Diet
Exercising is essential for losing weight—and so is eating a balanced diet. Similar to the Scarsdale diet that rose to fame in the late 1970s, the Atkins plan focuses on increased protein intake and limited carbohydrates.

Pros: "These very low carb diets can quickly and dramatically shed pounds," says Hendel. "Water weight goes first, then fat."

Cons: Low-carb diets have a bad rap in the medical community because of the potential long-term health effects of excess protein: high cholesterol, kidney abnormalities, cancer risks, unhealthy metabolic states, and osteoporosis. Atkins now includes more plant-based foods than when it was first introduced, though many nutritionists still deem it unhealthy. "Most people simply cannot sustain eating this much protein," Hendel says. "I've also smelled the sweat and breath odors of people on long-term high-protein diets, and it's a bit offensive."

Sugar Busters Diet
This low-carb eating plan is similar to Atkins, but not as intense.

Pros: "This diet steers clear of sugar-laden processed foods," says Hundt. "Natural foods—lean proteins, good fats, vegetables and whole grains—are emphasized, resulting in balanced blood sugar levels, increased fat burning, and a healthy lean body."

Cons: A potential drawback of this low-carb diet is increased protein consumption, which may have negative health effects in the long run. Steering clear of sugar is an excellent way to lose weight, but choosing a healthy balance of proteins, carbs and fats is also important.

The Maker's Diet
This diet is based on Biblical and scientific principles. It encourages dieters to observe God's dietary laws and attack the three I's: insulin, infection and inflammation. Fasting, supplements, cleansing agents, and kosher practices are promoted—making this diet less appealing to the general population.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I'm not much of a resolution maker, but it is important to always aim to be a better version of oneself. Not only year by year but day by day.

I am relatively late to the environmental protection party, and I am by no means the "The Queen Of Green" but I do believe that every little bit helps. If I can make a difference in the world by doing something as simple as telling the guy at my local deli that "No, I really don't need a bag for a pack of gum." you better believe I'm going to do it.
