Give To Those In Need.

One time not to be fashionable is when it comes to charitable causes. Many donated to charity in the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti, but months later many Haitians are still homeless and hungry. Instead of spending $5.00 on something frivolous today, give to someone who really needs it.

Elizabeth Schaeffer Brown's initiative, Choose Haiti, is relatively new, but is quickly gaining tons of support. Earthquake survivors are being paid to pick up the newspapers and bottles that litter their streets and make bracelets out of them. The bracelets in turn are being sold at retail outlets such as Forever 21, Footlocker, and QVC.

In the last 4 weeks 10,000 bracelets have been sold, with plans to sell at least 1 million. This will provide work for 3000 Haitians still living in tents, while simultaneously encouraging them to clean up their streets.

Do something good for someone else today, you'll feel great too!

Mean Green Cleaning Solutions.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I'm not much of a resolution maker, but it is important to always aim to be a better version of oneself. Not only year by year but day by day.

I am relatively late to the environmental protection party, and I am by no means the "The Queen Of Green" but I do believe that every little bit helps. If I can make a difference in the world by doing something as simple as telling the guy at my local deli that "No, I really don't need a bag for a pack of gum." you better believe I'm going to do it.

With that said, be aware of how damaging many household detergents and cleansers are to the environment. Every time you scrub the sink or do a load of laundry, you are sending all of those toxins down the drain and into the water.
Or, if saving the world doesn't do it for you, think about saving yourself. That fresh clean laundry smell (which is my personal favorite smell BTW) isn't ocean breeze, it's the smell of a possible endocrinology issue starting. Yes, many household cleansers contain ingredients known to cause reproductive, and/or endocrine issues, as well as cancer.

So for the New Year I'll be trying a few new cleaning methods out. I've heard good things about Nellie's Laundry Nuggets. (Why is the word nugget so funny?)

Available at NelliesAllNatural.com
36 Loads for $9.99
60 Loads $14.99.

Or maybe saving money is a better incentive for you, try these $ savers around the house.

You can use vinegar or club soda in a spray bottle in place of glass cleaners

Baking Soda can be used in place of your scrubbing products. Mix it with vinegar, lemon juice, or my personal fave, Dr. Bronners All Natural Soap to make a good scrubby paste.

Dr. Bronners can also be used for dishwashing, laundry detergent, and various other household and body cleansing. Stock up at DrBronner.com, buying on the website is way cheaper than what I see in stores.

For '09, don't just toast to health, do something about it!

Alex and Ani = Eco-Friendly Jewelry

Alex and Ani is a jewelry company owned and designed by Carolyn Rafaelian. Rafaelian's mission is to make her pieces not only beautiful and unique, but Eco-friendly. The metals used in her line are handcrafted from recycled materials, and the entire line is made in the good ol' U.S of A.
Check out the website: Alexandani.com for more info.

Alex and Ani was created as a vehicle to enhance human consciousness. To elevate human awareness, we aim to create powerful, meaningful, and spiritual elements that embrace life and deliver a stronger sense of purpose. Founder and designer Carolyn Rafaelian says, "The love that lives in our hearts demands that we do our best for all people." Alex and Ani is an effortless mix of uptown elegance and downtown cool, ethnic chic and causal couture. Made to enhance one's own natural beauty Alex and Ani is hand crafted in the USA. Each piece in the Alex and Ani collection exudes its own unique style, creating trends rather than following them.

On a personal note, previously most of my concern regarding products made in the U.S.A. were about people in other countries not being paid a living wage and working under insufferable conditions. But Obama's got me feeling patriotic, so now I also care that my fellow countrymen are gainfully employed and getting the American economy in motion so that I may go back to my previous irresponsible spending. I am only half joking.

Are You Registered?

I won't tell you who to vote for, and the debates over conspiracy theories and whether or not your vote really counts anyway could take years. But, if it does count for something, if it contributes to the smallest modicum of CHANGE, if you have an ounce of HOPE in you, please use your vote in the least destructive way possible.
Check out this video and think hard.

Plastic Bags Are Passe.

Go green with reusable shopping bags from envirosax

You need to get with this. Plastic bags litter parks, pollute water ways, and pile up in landfills where they will take 1000 years to break down. They are also made from valuable, non-renewable resources, such as natural gas and oil. (HELLO!)
Several countries including Bangladesh and China have already banned plastic bags. Canada, is currently working towards a ban as well.
I've seen some stores giving away free re-usable bags, or you can do your part for the earth in style. Envirosax, is one of many companies offering a variety of colors and prints on their re-useable shopping bags. Plus, they roll up nicely, and fit into your handbag, so you can be ready to whip it out whenever an occasion arises that USED to call for plastic.
